"When are you speaking to the Haim sisters?" a text pops up. "My request was to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains a key snag: The author likewise desires to be Haim's fourth member. And we're in plentiful company. Several high-profile supporters have also coveted the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a close gang. Their visuals often show them marching in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the ultimate honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate others to make music."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the fourth part of the family."

Award Nod

The band are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The album came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The words detail breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on ignoring the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Music

That recent resilience demanded a different sonic direction – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic horror stories.

Someone left Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global fan base.

But the sister act will consistently be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
