Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille in a Shootout to Claim Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

The Parisian club has now secured the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a comfortable triumph in the showdown featuring the French league champions and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring early on.

Yet, the southern French side fired twice late to take a shock lead. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, the Portuguese striker snatched a crucial equaliser in the final seconds to force the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a convincing penalty victory.

Now 14-time winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the past 13 years.
